Recognizing the stigma associated with mastectomy and acknowledging the high costs of prosthetic breasts, Limau has trained over 500 women to make knitted prosthetics with 100% cotton yarn. This not only empowers these women economically, but also provides an inexpensive option to women who were previously using cabbage leaves, rolled up T-shirts and socks instead of prosthetics.
The washable knitted prosthetics cost about $10 relative to their silicone counterparts which retail between $50 and $300 depending on the quality.. Over the last few years, Limau has donated over 200,000 knitted prostheses to breast cancer survivors in collaboration with Likii Tender Hearts Grp in Nanyuki, and other knitting groups around the Country.
We have donated to health institutions such as Kijabe hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital, Alexandria Cancer Center, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital,Coast General Hospital, among many others which are the most active cancer treatment centers serving a majority of underserved women.
